A group of hardy plant fans from Cheshire are putting together a plan that will wow the crowds at RHS Tatton Flower show this year with their stand entitled ‘what is a hardy plant?’
Razvan Chisu, 35, a professional gardener from Crewe is leading the team who aim to enthuse the crowd with a stand of plants grown by members of the Hardy Plant Society Cheshire group.
Razvan says: “the display will be educational and will use the Royal Horticultural Society’s hardiness rating scale so that visitors can understand more about the individual plants and select plants based on scientific information as to how hardy they are and how well they will grow in their gardens at home. The display will contain information on drainage, soil and temperature and will hopefully show the diversity of hardy plants.”
Members from the Cheshire group of the Hardy Plant Society (a national organisation which aims to promote and conserve hardy perennials) have been growing plants for the stand for the past year.
99% of the plants on show will have been grown by members and will be assembled by a 4 man/woman team headed by Razvan Chisu.
Razvan grew up surrounded by interesting and unusual plants in his native Transylvania in Romania where his mother worked at a botanical institute. His love of plants was nurtured from the age of five and he has set up his own professional horticultural business in Crewe. He says: “it’s wonderful the diversity of plants that we have in the UK and the number that can be grown in our gardens. With our ‘non-winters’ the last few years we have really started to push the boundaries.”
Cathy Rollinson, chair of the Hardy Plant Society said: “we wish Raz and our Cheshire group all the very best with their display at RHS Tatton Park this year. We know that it will be both beautiful and educational and we hope that it helps to show what the Society is all about – fantastic perennial plants and working together to conserve and celebrate them.”
The group will also have a plant stall at RHS Tatton Park which will sell hardy plants grown by the Cheshire members. The HPS Cheshire group numbers 120 members drawn from across the area including Warrington, Crewe and surrounding villages.
RHS Tatton Park will open for visitors from Wednesday 20 – Sunday 24 July Tatton Park, Mereheath Lane, Knutsford, Cheshire.
