Despite previous signs of possible delays due to calls from employer organisations as a result of the Brexit vote and uncertainty for the UK economy, the apprenticeship levy scheme has now been announced to be introduced on 6 April 2017. The levy will require all employers whose earnings are above Β£3m a year to make an investment into apprenticeships.
An online calculator has now been created by the government to allow employers to estimate whether their organisation will be required to pay the levy. The investments will be returned to employers in the form of training and development credits via a new digital apprenticeship service.
The credits will also be available to use in order to pay for re-training workers in new skills in order to allow them to develop in a different type of work, however it will not be allowed to be used for wages for young people.
The aim of the project is to provide young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to gain professional skills to ensure everyone has equal opportunities for training and development.
