by | 29 Sep 16 | News

The Canal & River Trust presented its annual National Living Waterways Awards. for inspiring waterways-based improvement projects across the UK at a ceremony at Birmingham Town Hall on 14 September.

Among the winners was the trusts own Helping Hedgerows project, which was awarded runner up in the community & volunteering category. The scheme has been running for the past three years, funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery. To date around 1,000 volunteers of all ages have helped nurse 20km of the trust’s 600miles of hedgerows back to health by planting, laying and gapping up, benefitting from training courses.

In the contribution to the built environment category of the awards, Sheffield’s Porter Brook Pocket Park won for its rehabilitation of a culverted stretch of the River Porter and the creation of a new waterside terraced park. As well as contributing to flood defences, it has increased biodiversity and seen a return of trout to the river. This is the first phase of a planned riverside walkway, and was undertaken by Sheffield Council’s landscape architects team.

Commended in the same category was the restoration of Saltisford Canal Arm, a stretch of canal in Warwick that dates back to 1799. Once derelict, it has now been transformed into working moorings set in gardens and orchards.
