Kew Gardens State of the World’s Plants stand wins GOLD at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

by | 23 May 17 | News

The stand showcases three key themes from Kew’s second annual State of the World’s Plants report, which gives a pioneering overview of global plant status and a cutting-edge view on how plants are faring and how this is changing over time.

The New discoveries and Conservation Successes consists of a selection of plants described as new to science during the past few years and now in cultivation at Kew. Many of the plants included are critically endangered, such as Isoglosssa variegate and Eragrostis episcopulus.

The Madagascar theme focuses on important and fascinating plants from this biodiversity hotspot. 83% of Madagascar’s 11,138 native species of vascular plant occur nowhere else on earth, such as 84% of Madagascar’s 37 native wild species of yam.

Finally, Plants in extremes consists of plants which live in extreme environments. Knowledge of plant evolution, resilience and distribution patterns is important to predicting future climatic and land use changes. The Rwandan water lily, part of this section, is the rarest and smallest water lily in the world.
