Landform Consultants built three gardens at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2017 and was awarded the coveted Best Construction Award and a Gold medal for The Blind Veterans garden designed by Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Dan Bowyer, a Silver-Gilt for The Perennial Sanctuary Garden by Tom Massey and a Silver-Gilt for The Urban Rain Garden designed by Landformβs newest designer, Rhiannon Williams.
Mark Gregory, managing director of Landform Consultants Ltd said: βWeβre over the moon with the results, especially to be awarded the coveted Best Construction Award for the Blind
Veterans Garden. Foreman, Ian Calder did a fantastic job and he should be very proud of himself and his team. His leadership skills and attention detail have earned this honour. All of the gardens that we worked on were very different and all presented their own challenges but weβre really pleased that weβve managed to do justice to the fantastic designs, bring recognition to two very worthy charities and give our newest designer, Rhiannon, the opportunity to get a taste of creating her very first show garden.β
Rhiannon Williams designed The Urban Rain Garden as part of the RHS showβs most recent addition to the garden categories, Gardens for a Changing World. The garden showcases the front and back of a terraced urban house and seeks to be an interactive, inspiring space to encourage visitors to adopt some of the ideas presented in their own gardens.
New designer, Rhiannon said of her medal: βI couldnβt be more thrilled. This has been a fantastic experience from start to finish and the team has been amazing. I always wanted to create spaces that are beautiful, functional and inspirational and The Urban Rain Garden will hopefully do just that. My aim was to demonstrate how designed interventions, both small and large, can be incorporated into our gardens, to allow us to adopt a more sustainable approach to water management.β
Rhiannon gained experience in environmental design as part of her Masters degree in Landscape Architecture and Ecology at the University of Sheffield, under the tutelage of award winning garden designer and environmentalist, Nigel Dunnett. Rhiannon cites Nigelβs green credentials as influencing her interest in making design both ecologically sound as well as aesthetically beautiful.
The Urban Rain Garden has been created by Landform Consultants in partnership with Squires Garden Centres and London Stone. It seeks to address the need for more sustainable urban water management within residential settings. The design employs innovative uses of rainwater catchment and explores how it can be moved around the garden in a both useful and attractive way. Terraced raised planters are designed with planting to suit both wet and drier conditions fed by the harvested rainwater. Plants best suited to wetter conditions are strategically placed closer to the downpipes, whilst those that require less water are planted towards the end of the garden. Maintaining its function, the garden also reflects a comfortable living space.
Mark Gregory said of the new design recruit: βRhiannon has worked extremely hard and weβre very proud of what she has achieved. A Silver-Gilt medal for a first garden is a triumph and this new category is a fascinating, topical and vital exploration into issues that need to be addressed. It is designers like Rhiannon that will pave the way in dealing with the changes that we are facing when
supporting our environment.β
