Warning – mentions of mental health and suicide
The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that more than 500 suicides are recorded in the construction industry each year alone.
For an industry predominantly occupied by men, this statistic is three times higher than the national male average– prompting the question, what more can be done to help those in need?
In response to the latest stats, North West home builder Genesis Homes and sister company Russell Armer Homes have chosen male suicide prevention organisation ANDYSMANCLUB as its charity of the year for 2024.
Chief executive of Genesis Homes, Nicky Gordon says: βThe charity has proven that talking can save lives, and we want the construction industry to throw its weight behind this amazing charity and that is why we are so passionate about supporting ANDYSMANCLUB as a business.β
He goes on to say βmeasures need to be implemented to try and reduce this worrying trendβ within the industry.
The charity has more than 150 locations across the UK, with plans to open additional clubs in the coming months.
To prompt wellbeing at work, Gordon has introduced a number of initiatives at Genesis Homes, including regular staff social events, monthly wellbeing walks and encouraging staff to be trained in mental health first aid.
