Wilkinsons Landscapes has partnered with Beverley School, a community special school in Middlesbrough, in an effort to encourage the next generation of horticulturists.
A group of year 10 and 11 students were hosted by the garden designer and plant centre operator as part of the schoolβs careers programme.
The partnership offers students the chance to learn about the Wilkinsons teamβs day-to-day work, from garden design and groundworks, to soft landscaping and plant care.
Simon Wilkinson, managing director of Wilkinsons Landscapes comments:
“More needs to be done to give young people insight into what interesting and fulfilling careers are on offer in horticulture. Iβve previously met with politicians and colleges to try to do more to increase training and qualification opportunities available in the north east, and Iβm happy to speak with anyone who is interested in doing more to help grow the skills base in the industry.β
Micheal Atkinson, a teacher at Beverley School, who joined the children on their trip, adds that “showing our young people what careers look like first-hand is crucial to give them something to aim for.β
The school specialises in supporting children with autism and is recognised as a regional centre of excellence. The school offers a curriculum that includes preparation for adulthood, focusing on employment, independence, and good health.
