Chattanooga, Tennessee becomes North America’s first National Park City, joining London and Adelaide as the world’s third city to be given this title.
The news follows a peer review process, coordinated by the National Park City Foundation, with support from Salzburg Global Seminar, and World Urban Parks.
From being one of the most polluted cities in the US during the 1970s, Chattanooga has since been named best outdoor city in America twice. Home to grassroots, community-led organisations and local businesses, the city has received support from over 5,000 citizens across the city.
London signed the charter in July 2019, making it the very first National Park City, with Adelaide, Australia, receiving its status in 2021.
Alison Barnes, trustee of the National Park City Foundation says,
“National Park City status introduces a new chapter for a city with a long history of revitalisation and renewal through connecting its unique landscape and the history of its people.”
