Garden designer Harry Holding says there’s a huge disparity in children’s access to the nature, so the more we can bring that into school and the curriculum, the better.

The multi-award-winning designer has been encouraging school children to grow their own produce through visiting schools as well as two gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

His debut – The School Food Matters Garden – won the People’s Choice Award in the All About Plants category, and the next year he was invited by the Royal Horticultural Society to design a feature garden. The RHS No Adults Allowed Garden acted as a platform for launching the show’s first Children’s Choice Award.

Holding is encouraging all age groups to get into growing, though, He was invited by the British Library to contribute to a book called Gardens of the Future, for which 10 designers were asked to design a garden around a theme. His was the food and medicine garden, and it’s part of an exhibition called Unearthed: The Power of Gardening which started this month.

He’s writing his own book too, Eat Your Garden, which will be published next year. “It’s about all things food growing. How do we bring food growing into our homes? What lessons can we learn from the big ideas around regenerative agriculture movement and how do we distil those ideas into garden form?”
