Plans to invest three quarters of a million pounds into the City of York’s parks, play areas, and public green spaces are expected to go to public consultation next month.
The investment plan, which was first announced in February, looks to prioritise higher deprivation areas of green space throughout the city; with the intent to update aging play infrastructure and improve the safety of these spaces.
The City of York Council hopes that the investment, and subsequent revival of these spaces will encourage more people to connect with nature, improve accessibility, social inclusion and play.
This investment plan follows the publication of the Council’s Space to Thrive report, which reveals a 50% decline in outdoor play over a generation.
Cllr Jenny Kent, executive member for environment and climate emergency comments:
“We are improving our oldest play equipment and creating spaces that bring people of all ages and ability together, whether to sit quietly in nature, meet people, play or exercise. We know that our parks and green spaces can be thriving hubs for everyone, and we want them to be fun, beautiful and welcoming for all.”
Following a detailed assessment using a weighted scoring system, approval for immediate investment into 19 schemes will be sought – these include:
A series of upgrades to Hull Road Park, including improved footpaths, play equipment, accessible seating, surfacing, and fencing.
New play equipment, safety surfacing, seating, and a linking path at Chesney’s Field, West Field.
Glen Gardens’ basketball court will be resurfaced and a new fence installed.
Five additional schemes, including pavilion upgrades and new access routes are also set to be investigated for investment approval.
