Brussels Airport invests in green public space enhancements

by | 19 Jan 26 | International, Landscape Architecture, News, Sustainability

Brussels Airport has announced the significant investments to be made in its infrastructure to improve public space, wayfinding and overall passenger experience.

Between 65,000 and 85,000 passengers pass through the airport everyday with expected growth. The terminal expansion intends to present itself as a lively, attractive space with a multitude of functions.

Alongside a new hotel, intermodal hub, expanded departures and arrivals hall and green boulevard with a park, the Brussels Airport Company (BAC) will work with Belgian–Dutch team of Witteveen+Bos, Benthem Crouwel Architects, OKRA, and Stramien CV to complete the project.

The outdoor public space will feature native plant species and water buffering to reduce the urban heat island effect.

“From the start of the boulevard to the new departure hall, greenery plays an important role in enhancing the quality of the environment. This makes traveling from Brussels an even more enjoyable experience,” comments Bas Heesels, landscape designer at OKRA.

Construction will not begin until the second half of 2026, whilst buildings are to be delivered in phases and final completion expected by 2032.
