Unused for over 40 years, the Monkbridge Viaduct Garden has been transformed into a 300-metre-long linear garden connecting homes, retail outlets, restaurants and public space.

The abandoned infrastructure was built in the 1840s, but ceased to be used from the 1960s once the closure of Leeds Central Railway Station was announced and remained in a state of decay ever since.

Now a green transit corridor, the Viaduct Gardens can be compared to the likes of New York’s High Line and Manchester’s Castlefield Viaduct.

Green-tech worked with both the main contractor, Galliford Try, and landscape contractor, Gavin Jones, for 16 months to develop what it is today.

Featuring landscaped pedestrian walkways, lawned areas and planting beds, the linear park now reconnects the Leeds-Liverpool Canal to the West End of Leeds.

In total, over 2,000 tonnes of soil was used throughout the site. Green-tech supplied its Green-tree BS3882:2015 topsoil in a mix of full loads and bulk bags.

Alasdair Innes, Green-tech specification advisor says, “This was a wonderful project to be involved with and being local to Green-tech in Yorkshire makes it a little bit more special,” adding:

“The huge amount of soil required meant that logistics and deliveries had to be spot on to dovetail with the landscaping teams. It is always a pleasure to work with the professionalism and organisation of the teams from both Galliford Try and Gavin Jones Ltd.”

Amongst a mix of trees and shrubs, visitors will also find John Chambers Wildflowers 80/20 wildflower mix. Other suppliers include Rootmaster compost and Mona irrigation rings.
