Dundee Dighty Burn’s regeneration plans reconnects green space

by | 01 Jul 26 | News

The proposals that will transform Dundee Dighty Burn looks to deliver major ecological, recreational and climate resilience improvements across the site.

The wider regeneration aims to reconnect the burn with surrounding green spaces, improve biodiversity, strengthen flood resilience and create an accessible blue-green corridor that supports both people and wildlife.

Stretching around 20km from the Sidlaw Hills to the River Tay, the Dighty Burn has played a key role in the city’s industrial and environmental history.

However, over the years alterations to the river system have damaged habitats and reduced the burn’s ability to cope with increasingly severe rainfall and flooding events.

Led by Dundee City Council, the initiative is part of the wider Water Resilient Dundee partnership, alongside Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Scottish Water.

Environmental consultancy LUC is working alongside infrastructure firm AECOM to support the project by delivering landscape design work. Rob Booth, chief executive at LUC, comments:

“The regeneration of the Dighty Burn represents a major opportunity to create a more resilient and sustainable environment for communities across Dundee, including the 45,000 people that live within a 20-minute walk of this stretch of the river.”

Home to deer and beavers, the Burn will include new walking and cycling connections, expanded green infrastructure, improved public spaces and opportunities for education, wellbeing and outdoor recreation.
