Brian Herbert on the BALI Leadership in Action Development Course

This week, Pro Landscaper sits with Brian Herbert of Outdoor Options to find out about the new BALI South Thames Leadership in Action Development Course, targeted towards business owners and project managers within the landscaping industry.

What inspired you to set up this course?

“A lot of supervisors, managers and directors in our industry started out at site level, with most of their training and acquired skills relating to specific disciplines,” Brian explains. “We at BALI wanted to offer a training facility to help develop individual supervision and management skills as their duties expand into leadership roles.”leadership

Brian continues: “Creating a course made up of industry attendees allows us to spend valuable time with peers, plus focus and tailor the content that exercises real and typical scenarios.”

Who is the course intended for?

“The course is designed for site supervisors, managers and directors. In other words; anyone in charge of others who is looking to improve their understanding of colleagues, assisting them achieving the requirements of their role and performing to the best of their abilities.”

What does the course entail exactly?

“BALI’s South Thames committee has partnered with Inspire Development Ltd to host the extensive six-month training course, exclusively for BALI members who are already business owners or project managers,” says Brian.

The course, set over a 25-week period, will cover a vast number of topics including:

  • Leadership development
  • Learning styles
  • Understanding what leadership is
  • Leadership traits
  • Practical tools
  • Shared learning
  • Managing conflict
  • Action planning
  • Building growth mindsets
  • Increasing self-awareness

In terms of the course’s availability, Brian explains: “The course will allow up to 14 BALI member individuals to network and share learning in an open, relaxed and informal environment at various workshops held at Merrist Wood College, starting on 21 June 2018.”

“The course programme will be designed to cater for the needs of the whole group. It is important that each participant attends all components of the programme,” Brian tells us.

“Each workshop will take place approximately eight weeks apart with a final day – a half day workshop in half groups to allow for sharing and cross pollination of practical ideas – to consolidate and share learning.”

What do you expect people will take away from their attendance?

“They should end up with a broader and deeper base of personnel management skills.”
