HLF announces vacancies on London and South East England committees

The HLF (Heritage Lottery Fund) has announced vacancies on two of its regional committees in the South East of England. There are three opportunities in South East England and two in London to join the expert groups that decide where and how to invest funds from the National Lottery.

The HLF supports every aspect of national heritage, including museums, archives and social history. The committees typically strongly represent these sectors, but the presence of senior Landscape Institute members will ensure that green infrastructure and the natural environment are not overlooked.

Jon Sheaff CMLI, director of Jon Sheaff & Associates, has sat on the HLF London committee for five years, during which time he said: “landscape architecture and management have been well represented on the committee”.

“We have supported a whole range of natural heritage and public open space projects including Gunnersbury Park, Beckenham Place Park, Pitzhanger Park and a host of others,” Jon said. “HLF funding has been crucial to the parks sector over the past 20 years. But when I leave, landscape and parks expertise will leave with me – unless a new member with equivalent experience steps forward.”

The HLF is seeking “a good mix of personalities, skills and outlooks” for both committees. Applicants should have expertise in a relevant field, including environment and regeneration, natural heritage, and parks. They should also have experience promoting inclusive delivery of projects and services and appealing to diverse audiences.

London committee members will be considering a range of major grant applications from London-based national cultural and heritage institutions, often for high-profile and complex projects. Members interested in non-urban landscape-based heritage projects, meanwhile, may find it rewarding to join the South East Committee, who consider Landscape Partnership projects in addition to a range of other heritage schemes.

HLF reports that committee membership can make an enormous contribution to personal development, career progression, and networking.

“It is a step I would definitely recommend taking,” Jon said. “My time here has flown by. I can genuinely say that being a member of an HLF committee has been one of the most satisfying things I have ever done professionally.”

The deadline for applications is Monday 9 October. Find out more about the vacancies in:
