Build a garden in just 60 minutes!

You’ve heard of the hour glass, but how about the hour garden?

The countdown has started for students from Askham Bryan College, who will be racing against the clock to demonstrate How2 build a garden in just 60 minutes at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show (23 – 26 April 2015).

As part of a new series of practical demonstrations for visitors to the show, the students will be building two gardens against the clock, with one traditional and one contemporary design.

Show Director Nick Smith said: “Building a garden can be a painstaking and expensive business, so it is tempting to postpone making a change, sometimes indefinitely.

“With the new How2 feature, we wanted to give visitors the opportunity to see a small plot come together quickly so that they can take away ideas for refreshing their garden, or perhaps part of their garden, easily and economically.”

The traditional cottage garden design, by Martin Ammann, features picket fencing, stone patio, lawn and colourful spring planting, while the contemporary garden, by Lynda Parkinson, focuses on a central fire pit, curved bench and gravel with trough planting.

Leading the How2 demonstrations is Askham Bryan College lecturer and BBC Radio York gardening expert, Nigel Harrison. He will also be showing visitors how they can identify and banish a variety of unwelcome bugs, as well as building raised beds suitable for back yards or small spaces.

Also NEW for 2015 are Dig for Victory celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of VE Day and a children’s activity trail featuring a new fun-loving friend called Pod!

Harrogate Spring Flower Show is the first major event in the gardening calendar, welcoming the new growing season with a spectacular celebration of the very best in horticulture.

Staged at the Great Yorkshire Showground, it was rated Britain’s best gardening event by Which? and features stunning show gardens, 100 top UK plant nurseries, four live demonstration theatres and over 300 garden shopping, craft, gift, regional food and specialist society stands.
