Television presenter and garden designer for Cityscapes Joe Swift won the Society of Garden Designers People’s Choice Award 2015 for his Greenwood Theatre Garden project at the ceremony on Friday 29 January.
The People’s Choice Award is run in conjunction with the SGD Awards media partner Homes & Gardens magazine. The public space, also designed by fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, was voted by the public as the favourite garden from 18 other shortlisted projects.
The Greenwood Theatre Garden was created in partnership with Team London Bridge, King’s College London, Network Rail, Southwark Council, and contractors Gardenlink, with maintenance from St Mungo’s Broadway Putting Down Roots programme which supports the homeless by training them in horticulture skills to help them find work.
It is a public pocket park designed to cater for a diverse range of user groups and needs including wheelchair access, being fully available to all users at all times.
Commenting on the his new accolade, Joe said: “Receiving the SGD People’s Choice Award for the Greenwood Theatre was a very proud moment for me and the team. The pocket park hopefully demonstrates how a tricky urban site can be retrospectively treated and turned into somewhere special and beneficial in so many ways.
“The collaboration with myself, Dame Zandra Rhodes, Cityscapes, Team London Bridge and others has transformed what was a very bleak corner into a vibrant destination which can be both viewed and used by the public at all times, connecting them with nature in the heart of the city. We are all thrilled that it stood out and so many people voted for it.”
Darryl Moore, director of Cityscapes, commented: “It is great that a park for the people has been recognised by the people. Joe and Zandra’s design has created a special place in the community that is already well used and will become even more treasured in the future.”
