Pro Landscaper August 2021
August, a month of huge celebration for Pro Landscaper Magazine, as the publication hits its 10th anniversary. Over the past decade, the magazine has come far, constantly developing and enabling people to share, inspire and be positive about the effects landscaping has on the UK. We couldn’t be prouder of everything Pro Landscaper has achieved so far! Receiving an overwhelming amount of support from the industry since 2011, we discuss industry memorable moments, testimonials, and newcomers, and the top 10 Pro Landscaper moments (which do include awarding outstanding businesses, and a royal engagement). This issue is jam-packed full, and we…

Pro Landscaper July 2021
The way we live and work is changing, so our towns and cities surely need to change too. Lockdown has made us all stay locally rather than venture further afield, and we’ve realised we’re either fortunate to have so much on our doorstep or disappointed to find a lack of green space or local amenities, even within our nearest high street. Fortunately, the High Street Task Force was set up pre-pandemic and is working hard to regenerate these once-loved spots. We spoke to experts on the taskforce on pedestrianizing high streets, the benefits of temporary schemes and how to foster…

Pro Landscaper June 2021
Every year, our June issue brings with it the launch of Pro Landscaper’s 30 Under 30: The Next Generation awards, a chance for us to recognise up-and-comers within the industry. This year is no different. The search for 30 rising stars below the age of 30 has begun, so if you want to put yourself or a colleague forward, please get in touch with us via 30u30@eljays44.com. With more than 50 years’ experience in the industry, Arabella Lennox-Boyd reflects on the changes she’s seen over that time and her career highlights in our Let’s Hear It From, whilst Matthew Bennett…

Pro Landscaper May 2021
We’ve all had the date of 17 May etched in our minds since Boris announced it was a stop on the roadmap to lifting restrictions. We’ve spent the last month huddled under umbrellas in pub gardens to avoid torrential rain, and now we’ll finally be allowed to drink and dine indoors. It has boosted confidence that all restrictions are likely to be lifted soon, hopefully at the end of June, and we will return to some form of ‘normality’. With hope on the horizon, our May issue felt like the perfect time to launch Pro Landscaper’s small project BIG IMPACT…

Pro Landscaper April 2021
By the time our April issue reached readers, spring was well and truly here. We’re coming across random gatherings of daffodils on our weekend walks now and there are Easter eggs in abundance on supermarket shelves. There’s more to look forward to as well with the first stop on the lockdown roadmap approaching later in the month. Perhaps less exciting, depending on how your business has fared throughout the pandemic, is the end of the fiscal year in a few days. Looking ahead to this, we asked our UK Landscape Barometer contributors whether they are looking to increase staff salaries…

Pro Landscaper March 2021
Last year, our inaugural Green Issue was published before the first national lockdown was announced. Back then, at the start of 2020, the conversation around the environment seemed unstoppable. Climate change protests were commonplace and reducing our carbon footprint was a hot topic at most industry events. One year later and we published our second Green Issue in the third national lockdown in the last 12 months. Whilst the world has changed perhaps permanently thanks to a global pandemic, we wanted to know what had changed in terms of sustainability. Had it remained at the top of the agenda or…

Pro Landscaper February 2021
It’s somewhat surreal to be going into February 2021 with the UK in its third national lockdown. And yet, here we are, once again being told to stay indoors to save lives and protect the NHS. Unfortunately for many, the fun of homeschooling is added to the equation. So, we thought we’d introduce a children’s colouring competition from our February issue – not only for a short distraction but to introduce them, albeit in a small way, to horticulture. When your issue arrives, the picture to colour is on the same piece of paper as your address. (And sorry, the…

Pro Landscaper January 2021
Phew! It’s finally the start of a new year and we can leave 2020 behind us. Coronavirus might still be front-page news, and a new tier might have been created recently, but a vaccine is on its way and we’re looking ahead to what will hopefully be a fantastic year for horticulture. It’s not just us, either. For our January issue, we asked industry experts what their predictions are for the next 12 months, and most of these were around a growing demand for sustainable and natural gardens. Contributor Katie Flaxman also hopes for the public to further connect with…

Pro Landscaper December 2020
Our December issue marked the end of a difficult and challenging year, not just for us at Pro Landscaper but also for those who read our magazine and contribute to it. Over the last 12 months, we have heard stories of struggle, but we have also heard from companies and individuals who have overcome adversity and adapted to a changed world. We have thankfully continued to see new projects announced too, or existing ones continue, such as the Urban Nature Project at the Natural History Museum in London, which features as our Future Project this month. We also hear from…

Pro Landscaper November 2020
Every year, November is one of our busiest months, and this year was no different. FutureScape might not have been able to go ahead at the ExCeL London as planned, but that didn’t stop us from holding the UK’s leading landscaping trade event, albeit virtually. In our November issue, we showcased the incredible seminar programme visitors could experience from the comfort of their own homes and the list of trade exhibitors they could speak to in just a few clicks. We also announced the winners of this year’s 30 Under 30: The Next Generation, sponsored by Green-tech, and the shortlist…

Pro Landscaper October 2020
Not long after the first lockdown was announced, Johnstone Landscapes told us the measures it was putting in place to survive the pandemic as sites across the UK were temporarily closed. Six months later, we chatted to Tessa Johnstone about how these measures had panned out (pretty well, it turns out) and about her role as a BALI board member. Tessa backs BALI’s aim to attract new people to the industry, saying it’s important to ensure that the horticultural industry is inclusive too. In our previous issue, we discussed how the industry could appeal to those from BAME backgrounds; this…

Pro Landscaper September 2020
You’ll no doubt have heard of the Black Lives Matter movement (if not, where have you been?). It’s an incredible campaign fighting for racial equality and highlighting the lack of diversity in a range of sectors – this, unfortunately, includes horticulture. So, now the issue has been raised, what can we do about it? Juliet Sargeant wrote an incredible piece for us in our September issue, an article that was no doubt tough to write, sharing her own thoughts and experiences as well as providing suggestions for ways you can act right now to make a difference. Straight after Juliet’s…

Pro Landscaper August 2020
The August issue brings with it stories of success and ending of eras. Our interview with Phil Jones, for instance, explores the rebrand of ESL Landscape Contractors to Cultura Group and how this better reflects the company’s ethos. We also hear from Tom Massey of Tom Massey Studio, who has gone from strength-to-strength since becoming one of Pro Landscaper’s inaugural 30 Under 30: The Next Generation. Last month, the industry also celebrated the achievements of Adam White as he passed his Landscape Institute presidency over to Jane Findlay of Fira. In his column, he reflects back on the last two…

Pro Landscaper July 2020
The current blend of heatwaves and blustery storms would normally mean we’re at the height of the flower show season. It’s a traditional British summer, when one month you’d be walking around the sodden grounds of Chatsworth and the next slapping on the sun cream as you explore the show gardens at Hampton Court. There’s no such luck this year, with all RHS shows cancelled for the foreseeable. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to celebrate. In our July issue, for instance, we launched this year’s 30 Under 30: The Next Generation Awards sponsored by Green-tech and we opened…

Pro Landscaper June 2020
Throughout lockdown, the Pro Landscaper team has been eager to continue delivering information and inspiration. At a time when businesses are struggling, it’s important to share the success stories amongst the more sombre ones, which is why we were thrilled to have Duncan Carrier of Carrier Landscapers as our Let’s Hear It From interviewee in the June issue. He shares how his business has remained resilient in the COVID-19 pandemic and how he’s built his business up to this point over the last three decades, running a successful nursery as well as a wide landscaping portfolio within the housebuilding sector.…

We’re starting off the new year by celebrating our 100th issue, sponsored by Millboard. To celebrate 100 issues we revisited Mark Gregory, who was our first ever Let’s Hear It From, to discuss his achievements over the last nine years. We also followed up with Rupert Keys and Ruth Gwynn of Keyscape, whose Heath Manor portfolio was featured on the cover of our first issue, and caught up with others who have featured in various issues throughout the years, such as in our Look Out For Revisited feature. A timeline of Pro Landscaper’s achievements also features, as well as a look…

In November’s issue we announced the winners of Pro Landscaper’s 30 Under 30: The Next Generation awards and the shortlist for the small project BIG IMPACT Awards. In the Nurture section, Nick Coslett and Lewis Normand both focused on climate change. We also spoke to John Wyer of Bowles & Wyer about his company’s recent success with rebranding, and Paul Burnage discusses the design behind Cannon Bridge Roof Gardens. On 17 October we also held our first ever Future Landscape Conference in London, coverage of the event can be found in this issue. For all of this and more click…

Renson’s Got You Covered
Renson’s ambassador, Life Outdoors, recently transformed a client’s outdoor space into a premium outdoor living area to maximise on its potential. The clients’ spacious garden had not fulfilled their vision to have a dedicated area for socialising and entertaining with friends and family. Following the brief, Life Outdoors suggested the Renson Camargue, a stylish and modern aluminium louvered canopy that would fulfil the clients’ needs and complemented the prerequisites of the clients’ striking garden and surrounding house. To cover the entirety of the space, three Camargues were interlocked to create a seamless space giving immediate shelter for anyone sitting in…

Pro Landscaper Equipment Supplement October 2019
As we approach the end of the year, there is on issue dominating our conversations: sustainability. Lowering pollution levels has long been on the agenda for governing bodies. Take the introduction of Stage V regulations for new non-road vehicles, limiting particle number emissions, and the Mayor of London replacing the T-Charge with the Ultra Low Emission Zone. Action is being taken to reduce the amount of pollution across the UK, but there’s plenty more work to be done. Battery powered kit continues to develop, though, and the number of companies and local authorities adopting this technology is on the rise.…

Pro Landscaper October 2019
In this month’s issue Andrew Wilson suggests that the process of designing a show garden is a concept that hasn’t changed much over the years. He asks whether a radical chance to the format is possible, and explores how events across the globe have redefined the genre. Whilst, Nick Coslett urges UK nurseries to grow more oaks in order to prepare for the future and explains why biosecurtiy standards need to improve. We visit Austin Design Works, a company run by landscape architect Rachael Austin and her architect brother Matthew Austin, to find out more about its work. We also…
