12 Days of Christmas: April 2022

Spring continued our return to physical events with the Pro Landscaper Business Awards 2022, bringing the landscaping community together for an afternoon to celebrate the excellent standards set within the industry. After another enormously successful event in 2022, we’re looking towards The Pro Landscaper Business Awards 2023, which will move venues to Old Billingsgate on 21 April.  Pro Landscaper’s April 2022 edition, meanwhile, saw Peter Reader move to “debunk the fairytale of farming”. “We lambast other countries for the destruction of their native environments, and yet we continue to destroy our own,” he said. Our ‘Let’s Hear it From’ for…

12 Days of Christmas: March 2022

Back in March, the landscaping community gathered at Sandown Park Racecourse for a day full of networking, debates, educational seminars, and inspirational talks. Futurescape Spring 2022, which hosted over 100 exhibitors, was the first to take place since 2019 following COVID-19 restrictions. Meanwhile, Pro Landscaper’s Green Issue – the third annual edition dedicated to the industry’s ever-evolving approach to sustainability – featured a UK Landscape Barometer special. According to the barometer, a whopping 80% of suppliers responding to our survey believed they were going ‘above and beyond’ to be environmentally friendly. Even more (90%) claimed they were making an effort…

12 Days of Christmas: February 2022

In a month that witnessed the publication of Pro Landscaper’s 125th edition, February 2022 brought a new CEO at Nurture Group, with founder Peter Fane replaced by Gareth Kirkwood OBE. Fane, who took up the position of Executive Chairman, said he believed the new CEO would “drive us forward and make an important contribution to the growth of the company”. Meanwhile, Lynne Marcus, chair of the Society of Garden Designers, argued that artificial grass is causing too much industry damage for landscapers to continue promoting it. “It has always shocked me that people who are aware of the damage of…

12 Days of Christmas: January 2022

With an ever-subsiding threat of further lockdown restrictions, the arrival of 2022 offered some cautious optimism for the twelve months ahead. As ever, Pro Landscaper sought to accentuate that much-needed industry positivity as we entered a new year. In our January 2022 edition, Sue Morgan featured as Pro Landscaper’s first Let’s Hear it From of the year, having landed her “dream job” as CEO of the Landscape Institute in August 2021. Meanwhile, freelance designer, writer and researcher Noel Kingsbury called on the UK to follow in the footsteps of mainland Europe to develop a “viable” strategy for large-scale perennial planting,…

What were the highlights of 2022?

It has been a rollercoaster of a year, with arguably more lows than highs. But there have been highs – and this has perhaps been a year when the green agenda has been fought for most vocally too. When there were rumours of Liz Truss watering down or even scrapping the Environmental Land Management schemes, there was uproar from wildlife charities as well as the public. She was accused of an attack on nature and environmental vandalism.   To celebrate the late Queen’s jubilee earlier this year before Her Majesty sadly passed away, a nationwide tree planting scheme – the Queen’s…

Pro Landscaper Business Awards: Training and development within commercial landscaping

Training and development are much needed foundations within all businesses, and commercial landscaping companies are no different. A great example of this in action is Maylim, the winner of the 2022 Pro Landscaper Business Award for the category of Commercial Landscaping Company. Maylim “places a significant importance on sourcing and retaining top talent within the industry and also on the development, training and progression of colleagues”. A clear example of this is the implementation of its Development Journal Program introduced in 2021 with its HR partner, Aspiring HR. Breaking down its programme, Maylim said: “The programme consists of employees having…

Creation of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI)

The seedbed for the emergence of the British Landscape Industry was created during the Second World War by the Luftwaffe’s Blitz of London in 1940. The Blitz destroyed large urban areas throughout the entire County of London, in particular the central core, resulting in over 50,000 inner London homes being completely destroyed. Following World War II, London was presented with a real opportunity to amend the perceived failings of unplanned and haphazard development that had occurred as a result of the Industrial Revolution during the nineteenth-century. The creation of new housing developments was to be mostly concentrated within areas damaged…

#TimeForTurf: The brains behind the campaign

It’s a controversial topic, artificial grass – and one which has sparked two people within the industry to start their own campaign against its use, #TimeForTurf. The origins of the campaign can be followed back to garden designer Charlotte Howard from Capability Charlotte, who admits that she has in the past used artificial grass within her own personal garden and has regretted the decision. Charlotte went on to say: “I work with nature, I see the damage that plastic grass does first hand”, adding that the artificial grass kills the soil beneath it. Paula Warman from Aura Landscapes and The…

Hey Google, are smart gardens the future?

A lot has changed in recent years but one of the most apparent changes has been the amount of time people spend at home – an arguably forced changed thanks to the pandemic. Numerous lockdowns saw the British public seemingly want to invest more in their gardens. Alongside this has been the development of smart technology, including products for the outdoors. Are we likely to see the two trends combine? It’s hard to see why this wouldn’t be the case, after The Smart Home Garden invited me to its immersive experience day showcasing one of its smart gardens. The experience…

It is important to remember that your role is to provide an impartial assessment of the scheme.” Fortunately for Charlotte, these DCOs make up a large part of her role at construction engineering company AECOM, which she moved to Cambridge to join…
