Open space management company, Meadfleet, have been shortlisted in the 2024 Unlock Net Zero Awards, in recognition of its efforts in mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss.

Shortlisted for a Biodiversity and Nature Award, Meadfleet’s Bee Friendly campaign aims to make open spaces more wildlife friendly and encourage communities and customers to follow suit.

The company says its space is now already more biodiverse, and the enhancements made throughout the campaign are also helping mitigate climate change.

The aims of the Bee Friendly campaign, which launched in 2019, includes the installation of over 30,000 sqm of new wildflower, the creation of 1km of new hedgerow, the planting of over 80,000 nectar rich bulbs, and the giving away of 2000 bee hotels to customers and communities.

Meadfleet says its targets are all on track to be met or exceeded this year, and it is using the campaign – alongside other projects – to provide engagement and educational opportunities with their customers, local schools and community groups.

David King, managing director of Meadfleet comments on the recognition, saying: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted amongst excellent competition in the 2024 Unlock Net Zero Awards for our Bee Friendly Campaign. Our team has been working hard to improve the open spaces we manage for biodiversity, so we are delighted that our achievements have been recognised by the judges.

“With the introduction of biodiversity net gain legislation earlier this year it’s more important than ever for us to demonstrate to housebuilders our expertise and commitment in successfully managing wildlife habitats. We believe our Bee Friendly initiative demonstrates our commitment to biodiversity and responsible open space management.”

The Unlock Net Zero Awards are hosted in partnership with the British Property Federation and are focussed on recognising the achievements of the housing, built environment and property sectors.
