The National Trust has announced that Troy Scott Smith has been appointed new Head Gardener at Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Kent.
Troy was Gardener at the renowned Grade I-listed garden from 1992 – 1997 and Head Gardener from 2013 – 2019 and returns to that role following two years at the privately owned Iford Manor Gardens in Wiltshire.
Troy said: “Sissinghurst is unlike any other garden I know. From my very first encounter, 34 years ago, it took my breath away and still today when I walk through the wooden gates and under the entrance arch the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
“Over many years I have had the good fortune of working closely with many exceptional colleagues across the National Trust. It is an honour to return and serve the organisation, both in the role of Head Gardener at Sissinghurst, where I want every visitor to have the same feelings as I did all those years ago, but also playing my part in how we rise as an organisation to the big challenges of the 21st century, including energy, the environment and how we work collaboratively with others to mitigate the effects of climate change.”
Troy has worked in horticulture since 1987. He joined the National Trust in 1990 and has since spent most of his career as Head Gardener at three National Trust gardens: Bodnant Garden, Conwy; The Courts Garden, Wiltshire; and Sissinghurst Castle Garden.
The announcement comes after the recent official launch of Sissinghurst’s bold Delos garden, which Troy instigated in partnership with landscape designer Dan Pearson. The innovative Mediterranean garden realises a scheme first envisioned by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson more than 85 years ago.
Troy continued: “I am impressed and greatly encouraged by the ambition of the National Trust, both for Sissinghurst but also in the way we can work collaboratively with others to find solutions to the challenges and expectations of a fast-moving world. I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to Sissinghurst as Head Gardener and look forward to working closely with the team to provide memorable and exceptional experiences for each and every one of our many visitors”.
Troy begins his role at the end of August.
