The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is inviting the public to vote for their favourite garden from the RHS Young Designer of the Year competition winners in a special People’s Choice Award. The vote has been announced as the charity is set to bring its North West’s flower show online for the first time with the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park At Home on Wednesday 22 July.
People can now head to the RHS website to view the 11 winning gardens by the Young Designers from over the years and cast their vote for which one they would like to see crowned the Best Young Designer Garden.
Celebrating and championing new talent in horticulture remains at the heart of the show. Since launching in 2009, the competition has encouraged aspiring designers aged 28 and under to create their own gardens and work alongside renowned designers as mentors to bring their designs to life at RHS Tatton Park.
The iconic competition has helped many finalists to kick-start their careers, including familiar faces such as Hugo Bugg, Sam Ovens, Tamara Bridge and Tony Woods being amongst the winners who have gone on to design award-winning gardens at the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Katherine Potsides, head of shows development, says: “We couldn’t capture the spirit of RHS Tatton Park without celebrating the talented Young Designers from the past 11 years and reminding ourselves of their incredible show-stopping gardens. I am always blown away by their talent, skill, creativity and promise, and it is fantastic to be able to look back over the years and be inspired all over again.
“Inspiring young designers and encouraging new talent is a fundamental part of the show so we’re delighted to still be able to celebrate and share the achievements of the previous winners online. I hope that our visitors will enjoy having a look back at the winning gardens from over the years and that their designs may even inspire a new generation of Young Designers!”
On the importance of the competition, Catherine MacDonald, one of the 2019 mentors alongside Mark Gregory from Landform Consultants, added: “Mark and I believe the RHS Young Designer scheme is an excellent opportunity to showcase new and emerging talent. It’s vital for encouraging young people who are starting out in their careers in landscape and garden design. It is wonderfully rewarding to watch their successes and see how they evolve and it is our hope that they develop the same passion and enthusiasm for creating show gardens and the same love of working in horticulture as we have.”
The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced as the online show opens on 22 July. Virtual visitors will also be able to enjoy a variety of inspirational gardening content including videos, articles and advice from some of the show’s favourite growers, designers and gardening experts and find out more about the huge variety of careers available in the horticultural industry.
