Planit-iE hopes to ride wave of success

Conwy Adventure Leisure has submitted a planning application for the UK’s first inland surf lake, masterplanned by Planit-iE.

The project, which will be called Surf Snowdonia, will use the Wavegarden© technology that has recently been developed with input from skilled engineers and expert surfers. This will be the first application in the UK and possibly the world. It will generate consistent six-foot waves.

Surf Snowdonia will be located in the Conwy Valley, on the 40 acre site of the former Dolgarrog Aluminium Works which closed in 2007.

Pete Swift, director of Planit-IE, said, ‘Every decision we have made is grounded in commercial reality. The sensitive setting, close to the Snowdonia National Park boundary, makes the landscape-led approach the obvious way forward.’

Planit-IE has proposed an entirely native planting approach, both to anchor the new elements in their landscape and to create new habitat opportunities.

Surf Snowdonia is expected to attract up to 70,000 visitors a year and will create approximately 100 new jobs. Subject to planning approval, construction is scheduled to begin in early autumn, with completion in 2014.
