Plans have been put forward as part of the County Council’s Environment Policy Statement to protect biodiversity in Northumberland.

Northumberland County Council is scheduled to discuss the development of a Council-wide biodiversity plan, which will include innovative strategies and projects targeted at enriching habitats and ecosystems in the county.

Plans also aim to contribute to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and the exploration of sustainable land management as well as conservation and adaptation.

While strengthening the Council’s environmental commitment, which has already pledged to invest funding into parks and open spaces, natural trails and the implementation of regulations to reduce littering.

“Increasing biodiversity will not only benefit the environment but will ensure a cleaner, healthier, more sustainable future for our communities,” says Glen Sanderson, leader of Northumberland County Council and cabinet member for climate change.

Biodiversity enhancement plans are legally required to be developed by Local authorities, under the Environment Act 2021 by January 2024.

An Environmental Policy Statement has already been developed by the Council highlighting the role nature recovery can have in mitigating the impact of climate change.
