The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has started the search for the 2013 RHS National Young Designer of the Year. The competition, now in its fourth year, is open to all designers and students, aged 28 and younger. The most talented three designers will be picked to build a garden at the 2013 RHS Flower Show Tatton Park.
The theme of this year’s competition will be Eco Innovations. Entrants will be asked to submit a design that considers environmental impact, using recycled or reclaimed materials and natural resources such as sun, wind and rain.
RHS Flower Show Tatton Park Manager, Kris Hulewicz, says: “The RHS is committed to promoting gardening and horticulture to young people as a career to be proud of. The RHS National Young Designer of the Year Competition gives young designers a platform from which to showcase their designs and launch their career to an audience of thousands who visit the show, and many millions more who watch the coverage of the show on television or read about it in print.”
The 2012 winner, Tristan Knight, says: “As a young garden designer it is always difficult to stand out from the crowd and kick-start your career; so when I saw the RHS were offering a sponsorship to build a show garden at Tatton Park for the chance to become RHS Young Designer of the Year, it seemed like too good an opportunity to miss. Probably the most overwhelming thing was the positive reaction from the public and press. The RHS Young Designer of the Year award is one that I will treasure for many years. Since winning the award it has given me a great deal of confidence when dealing with clients and it does give them the reassurance that they are dealing with a recognised RHS award winner.”
The three finalists will each receive an RHS grant of £12,000 towards the total cost of their garden budget.
The deadline for design submissions is 7 January 2013. For more information or application pack please email [email protected]
