Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire, a unique county-wide gardening service based in Basingstoke and Portsmouth, hosted a gardening open day on Saturday 7 June at its Basingstoke site, located at: Elizabeth Road Allotments, South Ham, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG22 6AX.
The open day was held from 10am to 1pm, offering people from Basingstoke and beyond the chance to purchase seasonal plants, herbs, and vegetables.
Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire has nine gardening teams working across Hampshire: six in Portsmouth and three in Basingstoke. It gives gardening support to local households, schools, housing associations and hospitals, providing garden maintenance, clearances and landscaping.
It also offers disadvantaged locals the chance to undertake a 12-week training programme towards a Level 1 City & Guilds Practical Horticultural Skills certification. Trainees are given the option of applying for six-month paid work experience placements after their training ends as stepping stones to careers in the horticultural industry.
The gardening service hosted its open day to raise more funds to support more local people with disabilities, learning difficulties, impairments and health conditions to learn, gain new skills and find work. The open day raised over £300, with 50 visitors attending the event. All profits generated will be reinvested into the Hampshire gardening service which supports local disabled and disadvantaged people into work.
The open day featured several special sale offers; with a buy two get one free deal available on plants. Guests and attendees were encouraged to bring their own empty hanging baskets along to the open day, with the Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire team offering to fill their baskets for £10.00. The horticultural project’s gardening services team also dispensed free gardening advice on the day.
Nigel Sully, Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire team leader, says: “Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire is dedicated to helping people in its local community across the county; be it through supporting people, businesses and organisations through our gardening support services, or by helping the disabled and long-term unemployed gain new skills and find work.
“We are keen to support more people from Basingstoke and Hampshire to live their lives independently and to the fullest. The more people who use our services, the more people we can help. We are pleased to have received such great support from the local community to help us achieve our goals of guiding people into work and independent living by attending our gardening open day.”
