Society of Garden Designers announces first digital conference

Due to the continued coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, the Society of Garden Designers is moving the postponed SGD Spring 2020 to a new digital format allowing delegates to watch the event live on the day or on-demand at any time over the coming year.

The Spring Conference – ‘COLOUR: the art, science and experience’ – will go live on Saturday 18 July 2020 with the original line-up of inspiring speakers exploring the use of colour in landscape and garden design. The event, which will follow the same day-long format, will also include a live Q&A session with delegates to ensure none of the atmosphere of the conference is lost.

SGD chief operating officer, Craig Moyes, says: “Video conferencing is now the ‘new normal’ and with the successful live-streaming of the society’s last two conferences, it is a natural progression for us to stage our Spring Conference as a digital-only event. The format will not only ensure the safety of our speakers, delegates and event organisers, it will also offer a greater degree of choice and flexibility to our delegates and allow the society to bring the conference to the homes of landscape and garden designers across the world.”

The event will lift the lid on the use of colour in the garden, looking beyond fashions and trends and exploring the subject from all view points, from artistic to scientific. The international line-up of speakers will explain how the right colour application can enhance us as individuals, illuminate our connections with gardens and landscapes and influence the way we use space.

Speakers include SGD Award-winning garden designer Emily Erlam; American landscape architect Steve Martino whose work blends colourful, man-made elements with native plants to reflect the sun-drenched beauty of the American desert; gardening consultant, planting designer and founder of Hunting Brook Gardens, Jimi Blake; self-confessed ‘bad boy of landscape architecture’ renowned for his originality and creativity Claude Cormier and Mike Allaby, author of more than 100 books on plant science. The conference will be chaired by Stephanie Mahon, editor of the Society’s Garden Design Journal.
