Rising sightings of yellow-legged hornet documented
According to the department for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra), there has been an unprecedented number of yellow-legged hornet sightings in the UK this year.
Formally known as the Asian hornet, it poses a serious threat to the honey bee and other beneficial species in the country.
In May, there were 20 confirmed sightings, followed by a further 14 in June, 24 in July and 42 in August. These numbers are far higher in comparison to previous years.
The vast majority of these sightings have led to a nest being destroyed.
Most of the sightings have been documented in Kent and South East England, but also as far as Dorset and Cheshire.
The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology has requested that the public should submit any sightings of the yellow-legged hornets. An online form is accessible here.
