Willmott Dixon to deliver next phase of 20-acre Nottingham regeneration scheme
National contractor Willmott Dixon has been appointed to lead the next stage of Nottingham City Council’s Broad Marsh Green Heart regeneration scheme.
The 20-acre scheme is set to convert the old shopping centre into a park, reinstating the ‘marsh’ back into the Broad Marsh through the establishment of urban wetlands in a space that was originally a marshland ecosystem.
Marshland sections will capture, slow and filter rainwater to decrease the risk of potential flooding in the area and create a water capture resource in order to help Nottingham City Council reach its self-established target of net zero by 2028.
The Green Heart scheme is being designed to establish ecologically rich areas and diverse pockets of biodiversity, with a green infrastructure network linking the Broad Marsh area from Nottingham Castle through to the 36-acre Island Quarter regeneration site and further.
Willmott Dixon director Nick Heath says: “Nottingham’s Broad Marsh Green Heart vision is a regeneration project with valuable green space at its core. Green space is important for the beating heart of all urban environments and brings major benefits too.”
Paul Wilkinson, chief executive of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, adds: “The appointment of the team to drive forward the masterplan and to physically deliver the Green Heart are key staging posts in turning our nature first vision into a reality.”
The Green Heart design was developed by Townshend Landscape Architects in collaboration with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust with Ares supporting the contractor on the landscape design.
Work will commence on this portion of the scheme in autumn.
