GreenItaly analyses horticulture in a changing climate

Horticultural trade exhibition, GreenItaly, launches its 2025 event on Tuesday 20 May looking at the future of the international horticultural industry through climate-drive challenges.

Hosted in London by the Italian Embassy and the Italian Trade Agency, the International Association for Horticultural Producers (AIPH) approved exhibition features a panel discussion.

Titled The Change Landscape of Horticulture, the panel is moderated by AIPH secretary general Tim Briercliffe.

Panelists included Cristina Morbi from Maetherea, Antonella Melone from  Italian Association of Landscape Architecture (AIAPP) and Gardenia’s Emanuela Rosa-Clot.

They are also joined by Andrea Minghi from Giorgio Tesi Group, and YouGarden’s Henry Williams.

Briercliffe says the sector needs to “adapt quickly and together,” adding:

“The plants and practices we use today may not suit the landscapes of tomorrow.”

The panel also discusses climate-resilient plants, the role of non-native species in supporting biodiversity and the importance of plant supply chains in shifting market expectations.

GreenItaly 2025 will take place in Parma 15 – 17 October, showcasing Italy’s plant production, urban greening and growing technologies.

Invasive fire ants spread across Europe for the first time

Invasive fire ants spread across Europe for the first time

The red fire ant, Solenopsis Invicta, has been identified across 88 ant nests spread over 12 acres in the city of Syracuse, Italy.

The invasive non-native ant species is thought to have spread from the US or China. Now established in Italy, studies warn of its rapid spread through Europe and the UK as it is one of the most invasive and destructive species.

The red fire ant has a ravenous appetite, with the ability to destroy crops and known to pose a risk to native ecosystems, farming, and human health.

With a painful sting, injecting venom to its victim if disturbed, they can rapidly form “super colonies” with multiple queens.

The red fire ant is the fifth most costly invasive species in the world. It is able to live in urban environments using concrete to build their nests under.

Causing structural issues with buildings, these ants have also been known to attack electrical equipment after being shocked.

The EU has banned the export of soil from the UK.

It’s time for “The Green Italy”

It’s time for “The Green Italy”

Horticulture, forestation and urban space represent a triptych of thriving sectors for Italy. According to ISTAT (the Italian National Institute of Statistics), the country boasted a relevant added value of 38.4 billion euros in 2022 (ranking second in the EU-27, after France) and the third highest value of agricultural production in the EU-27 (72.4 billion euros, +18.2% vs 2021).

The next steps to take are closely related to structural and long-term governmental measures, aimed to improve the energy transition strategies. Those hot topics will be on stage at Flormart – The Green Italy, the international exhibition of horticulture, green space and landscaping. Held in its historical venue (Padua, Northern-Eastern Italy) from 20th to 22nd September, the show will host more than 4,000 professional visitors from garden centers, importers and distributors from all over the world.

“The Green Italy”

For the second year in a row, the trade show is organized by Fiere di Parma (who boasts a solid multidisciplinary experience in the promotion and internationalization of typical productions) and offers two different targeted incoming programs: Flormart Buyers Program and Flormart Experience (exclusively focused on Italy).

Both are developed in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency and thanks to the support of major national and international industry associations. 150 selected

professionals from the goal markets of Europe, Africa and the Middle East will enjoy a unique, intensive comprehensive business experience aimed to globally raise the awareness about the relevance of Italian horticulture as a typical expression of the Made in Italy production.

The sectors involved

The internationality embodies a truly valuable commercial and promotional asset for the exhibitors, proceeding from several departments of the green sector: greenhouses and horticulture, cultivation techniques, but also architecture and landscaping and an extensive selection of innovative start-ups.

The events

A rich event program will accompany the visitors throughout the prevalent issues of the sector, including the climate transition on the urban landscape and the European top experiences in the planning and design of the newfound concept of green city, not to mention the modern role of garden centers and the best practices in the field.

With a variety of seminars on different topics, fronted by several industry professionals and experts, Flormart aims to introduce the visitors to a new paradigm of “Green Italy” in order to definitely bring the national skills and excellences to a new higher, global level.

The event will be held this year from 20 – 22 September.
