JCT sponsors mental health research project focussing on young people
Construction organisation, JCT, sponsors a new research project investigating the mental health of young workers within the industry.
A project initiated by the Tier 1 Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) and Mates in Mind, a registered charity set up to improve mental health within construction, also in collaboration with the University of Warwick.
The university has previously led several research projects exploring mental health in the construction sector.
Also supported by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), the next phase of the project will focus on research, led primarily by Mates in Mind and supported by JCT.
Research will focus on young people aged 16-24 working in the construction industry. Conducting interviews in the first half of 2025, the team will be using the data collected to develop a framework of recommended interactions for the construction sector.
Karen Kirkham, JCT chair says she is happy to have “the chance to provide financial support to a project dedicated to addressing very real mental health concerns in our industry,” adding:
“We were delighted to have the opportunity to be involved with this initiative.”
Samantha Downie, managing director of Mates in Mind also comments:
“With recent government announcements on both the need to build and the need to grow the workforce it is a key time to establish what will make the experience of working in construction better for the next generation.”
A summary of their findings will be released in the summer.
