Cheltenham promenade gets perennial planting makeover

Cheltenham promenade gets perennial planting makeover

The Long Gardens on the promenade in Cheltenham has been selected to support pollinators and the wider ecosystem thanks to perennial planting methods.

Designed to reduce time and waste associated with seasonal gardening, perennial planting features long-lasting plants that return annually.

Funded by Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucestershire County Council’s trees team, the project was led by Marta Cowling.

A public realm and landscape architect working for the council, Cowling was supported by colleagues from the parks and public realm team.

Intended as a sustainable and climate-resilient approach, the project plants a mix of shrubs, bulbs and evergreens within its majorly-perennial mix.

Paul Baker, cabinet member for waste, recycling and green open spaces, says the plants have been chosen “to support pollinators, bees and the wider ecosystem”.

The ground preparation, planting, watering and ongoing care has been delivered by the green team from Ubico, while Wyevale Nurseries supplied the plants.
