Ian Drummond’s houseplant trends for 2026

Ian Drummond’s houseplant trends for 2026

In celebration of Houseplant Appreciation Week across 12th -18th January, plant stylist and author Ian Drummond shares his thoughts on house plant trends for 2026.

“House plants are the perfect cure for helping you through the ‘January Blues’,” says Drummond, “with all of the health and aesthetic benefits they offer us”.

Houseplant trends for 2026 focus on sustainability, collectible and unique varieties, bold aesthetics in both plants and pots, and the use of smart technology to aid care.

Popular plants and varieties

Collectible and rare plants: There’s a growing interest in collecting unusual and rare houseplants, treating them like living exhibitions.

Monstera ‘Thai Constellation’

A variegated variety of the classic Monstera deliciosa with speckled cream and green foliage that has social media appeal and is relatively low-maintenance.

Philodendron varieties

Specific trending types include the resilient Philodendron ‘Brazil’, the elegant ‘Moonlight’ variety, and the rare, white-striped Philodendron ‘Birkin’, which is suitable for modern apartments.

Maranta ‘prayer plant‘

Known for their dramatic leaf movements (leaves fold at night), these plants add an interactive element and bold patterns to a room.

Alocasia ‘Silver Dragon’

This plant features thick, metallic-looking leaves with dark veins, adding an exotic and elegant touch to interiors.

Hardy, low-maintenance plants: Resilient species that can adapt to variable indoor conditions are consistently popular, appealing to busy or beginner plant owners.

Snake Plant ‘Sansevieria‘

Architectural and tough, these plants are great for framing entryways and are forgiving if you miss a watering.

ZZ plant ‘Zamioculcas zamiifolia‘

A classic hardy plant that provides structure and consistency in indoor displays.

Spider plant ‘Chlorophytum comosum‘

A nostalgic favourite that works well in hanging planters to save floor space.

Styling and care trends

Living wall art and vertical gardens: Utilising wall space with climbing or hanging plants to create “living art” is a key trend, ideal for small urban living spaces.

Bold planters and decor: The vessels are as important as the plants themselves, with trends leaning towards bold colors, unique shapes (like a bubble ceramic pot), and playful designs to bring displays to life.

Sustainability and smart care: Gardeners are becoming more climate-conscious, opting for eco-friendly practices such as using organic, vegan plant foods, rainwater collection, and integrating smart watering systems and moisture meters to avoid over or under-watering.

“Hoarding to honing”: Instead of simply collecting new plants, owners are focusing on long-term care and nurturing their existing collections to maturity, showing more interest in quality soil, grow lights, and proper maintenance.

Plant Healthy celebrates over 100 members

Plant Healthy celebrates over 100 members

The Plant Healthy Certification Scheme has passed 100 members, which covers more than 3,500 hectares and 180m plants annually.

The latest certified site is the Newton site of Forestry and Land Scotland, which marks a significant step forward for free and plant biosecurity and sustainability in the UK.

Managed by registered charity Plant Healthy, the certification helps professionals anywhere minimise the risk of introducing and spreading damaging pests and diseases when growing and handling plant material.

Malcolm Catlin, the charity’s project director, presented Newton Nursery with its certificate on 7 October:

“Passing the 100-member milestone is obviously a reason for extra celebration. In the case of this nursery, the investment being made in increasing the production of British-grown trees will help meet our planting targets with a high standard of biosecurity in place.”

The Newton site plays a crucial role in Scotland’s forest management, growing trees from seed, and supports timber production and woodland creation across the country.
