An additional talk has been added to Public Spaces Expo panel, to discuss whether new contractors can succeed in the commercial sector, chaired by Wayne Grills from the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI).
Grills, chief executive at BALI will lead the panel in providing a practical perspective and how they have succeeded or discussing challenges they have faced, and will take place at 10am on Wednesday in the Public Spaces Theatre within the Public Spaces Expo.
The panel will feature the likes of: Ed Belderbos, MD at Belderbos Landscapes, Sharon Butler, director of Butler Landscapes, Mark Gregory, MD of Landform Consultants and Oliver Gregson, founder and director at Hardwood Landscapes.
The session aims to help inform other contractors considering developing this area of their business with the panel sharing their experiences. This will include an opportunity for audience Q&A.
Later on the same day, the new Procurement Act 2023 will fall under the spotlight, with a discussion on whether more needs to be done to modernise public sector procurement and enable better relationships between the client and the contractor.
This will follow on from the first day where the Public Spaces Expo will also see a panel discussing a major aspect of new developments: biodiversity net gain and the opportunities it can provide.
A panel including associate landscape architect Brian Hawtin of Huskisson Brown, Future Nature Consulting’s director Peter Massini and Arup’s UKIMEA nature leader Tom Butterworth will discuss the impact of the legislation over the last few months. They’ll be joined by Helen Simmen, head of research and development of Wildflower Turf, and Tunley Environmental’s biodiversity specialist and sustainability scientist Tara Garraty.
Tuesday will close with a panel discussion around sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) becoming mandatory.

Hardscape has revealed plans for its own ‘village’ within this year’s Public Spaces Expo and StoneScape this October.
In celebration of the Hardscape’s 30th birthday this coming November, the Hardscape Village, a sneak peak of which can be seen above, will see companies from across their supply chain come together at Public Spaces Expo and StoneScape.
Among others, groups within the village will include Grupimar from Spain, IST Stone from Portugal, Stonework from Italy, and Ethical Stone from the UK.
Anthony Collins, sales director at Hardscape, says: “Putting key elements of our supply chain into view is something that will not be easily repeated at an exhibition, which I’m really proud of. It will peak people’s curiosity to have the opportunity to speak to people who are usually kept behind closed doors.”
“Hardscape is all about connecting our customers to the best of world’s supply chain, and our village will allow you to have a conversation directly with quarry owners from Italy, Portugal and Spain, so that you really connect to the roots of the material.
Other highlights of the village will be an indigenous stone map of Great Britain, produced with the support of the Landscape Institute and the Stone Federation of Great Britain, which shows off the scale of what Hardscape does, who it works with, and the stone that’s available in the UK.
You’ll also be able to experience our surface enhancement capabilities, interact with materials samples and see a live demo of Drainjoint, a leading sustainable urban drainage product.
The collaboration with the exhibition is the first for Hardscape who are the headline partner for both StoneScape and Public Spaces Expo.
Speaking about how it came about, marketing manager John Pagan says: “I’ve been aware of FutureScape and Eljays44 for a long time, and we’re aware of the scale and the reach of the company in some key markets.
“We felt with the continued development of Public Spaces Expo and StoneScape that now was the right time to connect. Our reputation and experience in the industry combined with FutureScape’s audience and reach, is the perfect fit.”
