Cardiff crowned UK’s gardening capital

New data from Raisin has found that residents in Cardiff spend the most hours tending to their garden, hence naming the Welsh city as the UK’s gardening capital.

The data surveyed 2000 people, learning that residents in Cardiff spend a total of 24 hours a month gardening.

Spending 41% more time than the UK average of 17 hours, Wales’ capital city takes top spot over the UK’s greenest cities such as Sheffield, Manchester and Edinburgh where there are more trees than people.

The survey was conducted to find a relationship between the nation’s savings and gardening habits.

According to Raisin’s co-founder Kevin Mountford, “A well-maintained garden can have a direct benefit to your overall wealth, adding up to 20% to the market value of your home,” he says.

Growing perennials and low maintenance plants can be rewarding and money saving, says gardening expert and author Simon Akeroyd.

“Taking a leaf out of the Welsh books could see you sow the seeds to a successful increase in your home’s value,” says Mountford.

Raisin were at BBC Gardeners’ World Live on 12 – 15 June helping gardeners grow their savings.
