Belvoir Castle renews David Austin partnership for rose garden

Belvoir Castle renews David Austin partnership for rose garden

Belvoir Castle and David Austin are teaming up again to continue the blooming of the castle’s rose garden.

With the planting of over 1,000 David Austin roses, the garden features a range of pinks, reds and creams.

Andy Tudbury, head gardener at Belvoir Castle says the rose garden is “incredibly popular, with visitors returning each year to wander within the walls to see and smell the magnificent roses”.

A restoration led by the Duchess of Rutland was guided by rediscovered archival plans by renowned garden designer Harold Peto, hidden within the castle’s extensive archives.

The plans inspired a faithful reinstatement of the garden’s original geometric layout.

The garden has been transformed into a sensory experience through early summer to autumn.

David Austin Roses launches pocket swatch book

David Austin Roses has created a pocket-sized colour swatch book for garden designers, landscapers and trade professionals.

The Pocket Handbook features over one hundred varieties of David Austin Roses, arranged around a rose-inspired colour wheel.

Each card displays a rose image with fragrance and growth habit details.

Highlighting the natural pairing of upright, formal forms for structured areas and spreading, the guide has been made to help designers to build schemes.

Liam Beddall, head rosarian at David Austin says it is a “simple idea that turns the full palette of our roses into a tool you can carry anywhere”.

Recyclable and durable, the handbook launches this week at the Professional Trade Services Open Week.

Hampton Court roses become biodegradable confetti

English Rose breeder and supplier, David Austin has donated all spent blooms from the gold medal winning roses exhibit at last week’s RHS Hampton Court to Confetti Club London to become biodegradable confetti.

Over 60,000 petals from over 20 English Rose variants, including the Penelope Lively®, a new rose revealed at Hampton this year will become sustainable, biodegradable confetti sold on via Confetti Club London with all profits going to several UK cancer charities.

CEO David Austin Jnr. says: “This is exactly the sort of socially responsible behaviour we care to foster at David Austin® – the sort that is charitable and thoughtful towards the planet and others.

“The BLOOM initiative started with introducing eco systems at our Plant Centre and HQ like our water capture system that provides us with 90% of our annual water consumption, but seeing it grow and extend to a kind-hearted brand like Confetti Club London is a wonderful thing.”

RHS Chelsea Flower Show will commemorate the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll

This years’ annual 2023 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show will commemorate the life of late Queen Elizabeth ll, whilst celebrating the coronation and reign of King Charles lll.

Her late majesty was in regular attendance at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the duration of her 70-year reign, frequently accompanied by fellow members of the royal family.

RHS director of shows and gardens, Helena Pettit says: “Whilst there will be joyful celebration around the King’s Coronation at RHS Chelsea this year, the absence of our late Queen on the afternoon before we open will be profoundly felt by many.”

The RHS show will focus on commemoration and celebration, reflecting on the past and the life of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll, whilst looking to the future of King Charles lll.

Designer Dave Green’s ‘A Garden of Royal Reflection and Celebration’ features a plant palette of light pinks and whites, featuring ‘Olivia Austin’ roses and silver birch, capturing the late Queen’s personal tastes.

A plant palette of blues, purples and pinks will be featured to represent the King’s preferences, combining the two monarch’s tastes to create a celebration of unity.

Harkness Roses, RHS Gold Medal winners and breeders of exquisite British roses for more than 140 years will be showcasing a display inspired by the British flag, to celebrate the coronation of King Charles lll.

The displays will be enclosed by hedging to create a space for contemplation and reflection for attendees to find peace within.

The Great Pavilion will showcase a topiary art display of ‘Emma’, a 24-year-old black fellow pony owned by her late majesty.

Emma was seen around the world, stood to attention for the late monarch’s final journey to Windsor Castle and is known to have been very dear to the late Queen, who was known to have raised horses from an early age.

RHS director of shows and gardens, Helena Pettit continues to say: “Her annual visit would lift the whole showground, so I hope our royal tributes will help keep those happy memories alive.”

The 2023 RHS Chelsea Flower show will be held from the 23rd to the 27th of May.
