‘Promising’ research for the industry finds consumers want to invest in outdoor living

According to Unhooked Communications for its Homes Unhooked 2025-2026 report, 21% of homeowners intend to carry out garden landscaping work, an increase from 17% in 2023.

Claire Gamble, managing director of Unhooked, says it is “promising to see that the research points towards consumers prioritising their outdoor spaces.”

With 35% of consumers planning to buy plants or outdoor furniture in the next year, up from 27% in 2023, other aspects of the home see a dip in interest.

Hard landscaping materials such as decking, paving and raised beds have been introduced to the research for the first time. 15% of people say they will invest in these materials, while 20% are planning on buying items such as outdoor seating and furniture.

The report finds that 36% of consumers look for advice from industry experts before making a purchase. They also look toward social media, retailer advice, Google and Youtube to research home improvements.

Gamble says it is the “perfect time” for the industry to help demonstrate how products can meet consumer needs.

The report also warns that 31% of consumers say cost and value will influence their purchase the most. 48% state they actively want to support local businesses, while 35% say they are likely to buy from a business with positive recommendations.

The research surveyed 2,001 UK adults, and the full report can be found here.
