Amsterdam steps closer to urban district development

Amsterdam steps closer to urban district development

Funds have been made available for Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to build 6,200 new homes in De Nieuwe Kern, with plans to create a “real urban district,” says city planners.

Featuring facilities such as shops, play and sports areas and greenery, the site aims to also connect the southwest of the city to its centre through cycling and walking routes.

Green spaces will be curated by urban designer Hendrik Petrus Berage, who led the expansion of west Amsterdam in the 1920s.

The new urban district intends to ease the housing shortage in Amsterdam. The government of the Netherlands has committed to spending €7.5bn on adding 100,000 homes a year to the national stock.
