SLA to create Copenhagen’s first urban park in a decade

SLA to create Copenhagen’s first urban park in a decade

For the first time in over a decade, the city of Copenhagen is set to establish a new, large-scale urban park in Nordhavn, designed by Team SLA.

Nordør – New Park in Nordhavn will be a 30-hectare constable nature park intended to connect people and nature.

It will “set new global standards for climate-positive and nature-positive urban design and redefine Copenhagen’s relationship with its water,” says team SLA.

Mette Skjold, senior partner and chief executive at SLA says “humanity is more alienated from nature than ever before,” therefore the park “will not only set new standards for carbon sequestering and biodiversity, but alive all restore our connection to nature”.

The urban park design will combine sport fields, beaches, playgrounds, activity areas and community spaces within wild-self growing nature.

Formed from the existing landscape of Copenhagen’s deposited soil, slopes and ridges, the site will be refined into lagoons, meadows, grasslands, forest edges and marine reefs.

Designed for the city of Copenhagen and By & Havn, the construction of the park is set to start in 2028.

Landscape architects Grant Associates have designed a new 4,120m² public square at Brabazon which includes the largest new urban park in the southwest for 50 years, Brabazon park.

Concentrating on street corridors and landscape-led planning, the masterplan has been approved by South Gloucestershire Council.

Commissioned by YTL Developments, the square will act as a central civic centre and arrival point for passengers arriving by train once the station’s construction is completed.

Built on the former Filton Airfield, the new city district of Brabazon will include 6,500 new homes, student accommodation and 86 acres of public space, parks and playing fields.

There will be a range of tree planting and a seasonal garden, too.

Keith French, director at Grant Associates, comments:

“The new civic square next to the station will act as a green gateway for rail passengers visiting both the Arena and the wider neighbourhood.”

It will take just 15 minutes from the new station on the train to Bristol Temple Meads.
