The Yorkshire School of Garden Design celebrated its first anniversary with an exhibition of works from its inaugural graduates.
The event, which was held at the school’s 100-acre Grade I listed Harewood House residence, was attended by landscape designer, Alistair Baldwin, who founded the school in August of last year.
The school’s ‘flagship’ Diploma in Garden Design is a one-year part-time course, structured to prepare students for the challenges in professional practice, with industry professionals at the helm.
“I can’t believe it has been a year”, says Baldwin. “This generation of landscape designers are truly something to behold.”
Students’ portfolios were showcased at the event, with a lecture from award-winning landscape designer and broadcaster, Matthew Wilson.
“When I heard about the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry, in a face-to-face environment, I jumped at the chance,” says graduate Tim Gray after making the switch to horticulture.
“The Diploma in Garden Design is such a unique course, as it offers students the opportunity to learn the fundamental tools required for a career in garden design, as opposed to solely landscape architecture or gardening.”
The Yorkshire School of Garden Design is now accepting applications for the 2024 Diploma in Garden Design and has released the details of its various 2023-2024 short courses, including An Introduction to Garden Design, Designing with Plants, and Seasonality and Layering.

Alistair Baldwin will be showcasing “Scotland’s most famous renaissance garden” in a new series on Sky.
The garden design and founder of the Yorkshire School of Garden Design will be appearing in episode six of The Art of the Garden, discussing the garden at Kinross House in Scotland.
The gardens of the 300-year-old estate sit between the house and landscape on the banks of Loch Leven. Originally created by architect Sir William Bruce, who purchased the estate in the 1600s, the gardens have been restored and inspired by Bruce’s masterplan.
Over six episodes, The Art of Garden Design series will feature six gardens, all designed by some of the country’s leading designers, with each programme focusing on a top designer and their latest projects.
Garden designers including Ann-Marie Powell, Piet Oudolf, Luciano Giubbilei, Jo Thompson and Andy Sturgeon will also appear on the series, which starts on Tuesday 9 May and will continue each week, airing at 7pm on Sky Arts.
The programme can be viewed on Sky channel 130, as well as Freeview channel 11 and Freesat channel 147.

The Yorkshire School of Garden Design is launching a new course to equip budding garden designers with drawing skills.
The Freehand Sketching for Designers course will “explore and demystify the principles of perspective, teaching students how to capture the character and texture of planting on the page, while trying out a range of media for applying impactful colour and learning about how to use computer software to add those all-important finishing touches”.
Taking place at the Yorkshire School of Garden Design’s studio at Harewood House, the course will apparently combine a series of “easy-to-follow steps and shortcuts” with exercises designed to build students’ confidence.
“One of the most valuable skills any designer can develop is the ability to express their ideas through drawing,” said Yorkshire School of Garden Design founder Alistair Baldwin. “This course is a personal favourite and is the perfect opportunity for those looking to observe the world around them with new eyes, translating their vision into clearly communicated drawings.”
According to the school, the course will also act as a stepping stone for those interested in its diplomas in both garden and planting design.
