The BIG Little Interview – Katrina Roy

Katrina Roy, subeditor at Eljays44, works on the company’s principal magazines: Pro Landscaper, Pro Arb and Garden Centre Retail. She also works on Pro Landscaper’s accompanying supplements and Pro Landscaper Africa. Having always been a lover of nature, she enjoys combining her interests of journalism and the horticulture industry!

What is your favourite part about working on Pro Landscaper magazine?

Working with fantastic, enthusiastic team members and learning more about the industry.

Other than the UK, which country’s landscape inspires you the most?

Norway – If it wasn’t so expensive, I would just ride around on trains appreciating the diverse landscapes.

What is your meal deal of choice?

The Plant Chef wrap (new for 2020 – I think – wohoo!), Dairy Milk chocolate (biggest chocolate bar in the meal deal) and the green Innocent smoothie (anything green must be healthy, right?).

One thing that you think would make the industry better? And why?

Teaching children horticulture in schools. With climate change rising to the top of many people’s concerns, learning more about this sector from a young age would be very convenient for future generations.

Best piece of trivia you know?

I can’t decide between:

  • At the 1908 Olympics, the Russians showed up 12 days late because they were using the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar.
  • China owns nearly all of the pandas in the world, even the ones you see at zoos. They rent them out for about $1 million a year.
  • Bubble wrap was originally intended to be used as 3D wallpaper.

The one person in the industry you’d love to meet? And why?

Probably most people would say this, but David Attenborough! I feel like he’d have endless life stories that I’d love to hear.

If your life was a movie what three songs would be on the soundtrack?

On the road again – Willie Nelson (this scene would have to include some sort of road trippin’, of course), One Love – Bob Marley (not sure what scene this would be, but it’s good for chilling out) and Tamacun – Rodrigo & Gabriela (fun song to pick up your mood).

Greatest life achievement?

So far… Either becoming fluent in Spanish or representing my country in rhythmic gymnastics.

Your favourite joke?

In this very moment, this one made me chuckle: I’ve got a chicken-proof front lawn. It’s impeccable!

What three things would you take to a desert island?

My meal deal… Seems like a nice place to eat lunch.
