‘The Making of Three Gardens’, by Jorge Sánchez, offers a unique and personal insight into the craft of garden design, illustrated throughout with specially commissioned photographs by Andre Baranowski. The book explores three of SMI Landscape Architecture’s recent private gardens in detail, revealing the evolution of each design.
Jorge Sánchez, a principal partner at SMI, explains the thought processes behind these very different gardens, of which two are in Florida and one is in Scarsdale, New York. He discusses his clients’ unique requirements and the particular challenges faced, from finding plants hardy enough to withstand the ravages of Palm Beach’s winter winds, to creating a garden in Miami with a Long Island aesthetic.
SMI Landscape Architecture is known for its estate masterplanning, its public gardens and streetscapes, and its thoughtful private gardens. The firm applies a ‘botanical garden’ approach to its schemes, using exotic planting and elements of classical European design to create spectacular, carefully considered spaces that are perfectly tailored to its clients’ needs.
Sánchez’s expert insights provide a strong sense of participation – with the clients, with the climate, landscape and local flora, and with the other designers involved in each commission, including sculptors, architects and lighting specialists. It’s clear from Andre Baranowski’s illuminating photographs that such collaborative efforts result in truly remarkable gardens.
As Sánchez explains in his introduction to this inspiring book, ‘landscape gardening … has allowed me to fulfil and enrich my life in ways I could never have imagined.’
