The Parks Alliance comment on Health Commitee findings

Parks Alliance responds to the Health Committee’s Sixth Report on Impact of physical activity and diet on health: Parks are an investment in the nation’s health and wellbeing.

Welcoming the Health Committee’s call to get people moving to improve people’s health, Dr Sid Sullivan of The Parks Alliance said:

“Parks will be key to the success of future campaigns to tackle physical inequality. Parks provide vital health resources that help to support healthy populations – they are the nation’s playgrounds for sports and activity. Good quality green spaces are crucial to increasing the number of people getting active, participating in sport, lowering stress levels and improving the nation’s health.”

“The report calls on the next Government to make a clear commitment to increase the levels of cycling and walking. Parks provide sustainable and cherished green open spaces that will help the next Government meet this commitment.”

“An estimated 2.6 billion visits are made to the UK’s parks each year. Already on the brink of crisis, parks need more investment and innovation to help local authorities and friend groups protect and improve the parks we already use to play and be active. Parks are an investment in the nation’s health and wellbeing.”

The Health Committee today published a report on the impact of physical activity and diet on health. The Health Committee concludes there needs to be a greater emphasis on the benefits of physical activity.
